Three Critical Tips on Preserving Your Residential Roof Coatings

by Francis Ortiz

Coatings are beneficial for restoring the worn-out roof installed over your residential building. In simple terms, the roof coating will enhance the appearance of the structure by concealing the faded colour of the surface. Also, the layer will improve the performance of the roof by minimising the absorption of heat into the home. As a result, the energy efficiency in your home will improve. If you are thinking about using a roof coating, consider these simple tips on preserving the new layer.

Sweep and Clean the Roof Surface

The residential roof will be exposed to leaves, debris and dust from the surroundings. If these materials are allowed to rest on the roof, they could cause damage to the roofing. For instance, the twigs and leaves will exert pressure on the coating, especially when it rains. Over time, the coat will weaken and even sustain damage. Also, you should remember that the weight of debris can contribute to roof structural damage. Therefore, you should perform regular cleaning of the roof. Sweep off the waste with a soft bristled brush and rinse with a hose or gentle water pressure. This practice should ensure that your roof looks perfect for longer.

Minimise Contact with Tree Limbs

Tree limbs can be highly detrimental to the roof coating. In general, the coating material will adhere well to the roofing surface, ensuring long-term performance under ideal circumstances. However, if there is an overhanging branch over your roof, premature failure is almost inevitable. The limbs will continuously scratch the coating, especially when the wind moves them. The constant friction will wear away the protective layer. Over time, the internal structure of the roof might sustain permanent damage. Moreover, the limbs might fly into the roofing during storms. Therefore, you should remove the trees near your home if possible. Alternatively, practice more diligence in pruning, thinning and trimming practices.

Inspect the Roof Regularly

Finally, you should perform regular inspection of your roofing structure and coating. Most problems which escalate and necessitate expensive repairs can be minimised through early detection. Sometimes, your paint coating might be destroyed through accidents such as accidental impact by flying objects. Also, rodents and other nuisance animals can interfere with the integrity of the layer. You should contact a professional roofer to inspect and repair structural damage. If only the coating has sustained damage or declined in appeal, you should consult a roof restorations painting expert to recoat your roof and boost its aesthetics.
